SUNSET GROVE MEN’S CLUB
January 26, 2016
Hello and Happy New Year Sunset Grove Men’s Club members.
First of all, thanks to all of the officers and members for volunteering or just stepping in and giving a hand to make 2015 a great year. Thanks to all the returning officers and welcome Joe VanDomelen as our new Secretary / Treasurer. Your 2016 officers are listed at the end of the letter. Due to another OGA increase, membership fee is now $65.00 + $2.00 hole-in-one insurance a year, an increase of $2.00 from last year.
Associate Members: The first trial year went well. We did learn, however, that if you are an associate member the OGA will not recognize you as our club champion. Associate members will be allowed to play in our Club Championship, but the title will not be recognized by the OGA and you will not be eligible for the Tournament of Champions. We will recognize you though. .
***There are new USGA rules in effect this year that I hope you all will become familiar with. I’ll list the big 3 here. First is the ban of the anchored club / putter (Rule 14-1b). The club voted in a local rule that if you have a medical reason to continue using a long putter, submit your request to the club and the officers will discuss and approve. Note: this exemption will only be for Sunset Men’s Club use, any event you participate in outside of Sunset Grove Men’s Club will be subjected to the new rules. Second, you can no longer post solo rounds, which means if you are playing all by yourself, you cannot post that round. There has to be at least one witness that plays the full round with you. Third is the withdrawal of Rule on ball moving after address (Rule 18-2b). This means that if the ball moves after address, it is no longer a 1 stroke penalty as long as the movement was not caused by the player addressing the ball.
Hole-in-one insurance is still in place. There were 2 Aces last year! Congratulations again to Bruce Meeuwsen and Miguel Guzman. Some of you have put money back in the hole-in-one pot after Miguels, but here’s your chance to get back in.
2016 Tournament changes: First , we’re incorporating the St. Baldricks Charity into our Shamble Tournament on March 12th. I will be sending out additional information for that event very soon so we can get as much participation and money raised for the charity. We’ve never done a charity event in my tenure and I’m looking forward to this. Also we’ve added a Friday night glowball 9 hole Scramble in which we will be looking for a charity to sponsor. We’ve changed dates, formats, and the Calcutta this year will be played in June on 2 consecutive Saturday’s instead of one weekend. There are multiple tournaments on Thursday again this year. When you look at the tournament schedule, the front side tournaments are the weekend / holiday tournaments, the backside you’ll find the Thursday tournament schedule along with a color coded yearly calendar to help you plan for more golf in 2016! We still need more participation!
As an incentive for participation and new membership, we voted in a $5.00 credit to anyone who brings in a new member. This $5.00 can be used instantly as a discount against the new member’s dues, or it will be credited to you. We have not completely figured out how the credit to you will work so more to come on that.
Sign up’s for tournaments: We really need to focus on getting signed up for weekend tournaments earlier in the week. So this year make sure you are signed up by Tuesday the week of the tournament. This will be the new standard moving forward.
Men’s Club days are: Tuesdays at 10:00 a.m., Thursdays at 11:00 a.m., and Saturdays at 8:00 a.m. March 1st – Oct 31st, Saturday play Nov 1st – Feb 28th/29th, starts at 9:00 AM. Please sign up by Tuesday afternoons for Thursday play, Thursday afternoons for Saturday play, & Tuesday afternoons for weekend tournaments. You can come by or call the clubhouse to have your name added to the list. The course needs to block out our tee times. If you don’t get signed up you may not be able to play. Please pay, sign in and check in at the counter for your green / cart fees. And the cash sign in at the table for the club games. Also to help the course, please make sure you check in with the clubhouse when making the turn on 18 holes.
ALL ALCOHOL ON THE COURSE MUST BE PURCHASED FROM THE CLUBHOUSE! Please respect this rule so Sunset Grove doesn’t risk losing their liquor license, we all enjoy the selection and prices of our favorite frosty beverages they provide, let’s keep it that way!
New cart path’s! For those of you who haven’t been out for a while, Dave has installed a bunch of cart paths and signs throughout the course to help keep carts out of trouble and help keep the golf course in great condition. Please stick to the paths and respect the boundaries.
I plan on doing a 50/50 raffle this year. This will be much simpler than trying to sell raffle tickets for golf equipment. Instead, it will be for cash! I am not sure if it will be a true 50/50 raffle, I may have a Grand Prize, First Prize, and Second Prize to give people more opportunity. Look for this to start in the Spring. The profits will go towards more prize money in events this summer!
Thank you and let’s have a great year,
